Why on earth would you want to relax poolside in the Mediterranean when you could be driving across the desert!

Forget the sun loungers this year, why on earth would you want to relax poolside in the Mediterranean when you could be driving across the Sahara Desert in a 4x4? Friends and family will think you’re having a midlife crisis, but who cares!

First run in 2018, Driven to Extremes SAHARA is a 2 week 4x4 vehicle expedition in which you and your teammates will take on the original Dakar Rally route in support of injured military veterans suffering from PTSD.

From the Algerian border to the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll battle your way across hundreds of miles of sand, rock and gravel through Morocco - and we’ll be there to support you all the way.

Open to anyone with a sense of adventure. Are you up for the challenge...?

The Vehicles

If you haven’t got a 4x4 vehicle then you’ll need to buy an old Land Rover Freelander 1 for as little as £500. Each team of between 2 and 4 drivers must find and prepare their own car, but If you’re not sure what to do, we can advise on how to source and prepare your vehicle, or even do the job for you…contact us for more information.

If you’ve already got a 4x4, then you’re also welcome to join us in the desert, all you’ve got to do is check that your vehicle is ready for some gruelling tracks.

The Challenge

Neither a race nor a rally, Driven to Extremes SAHARA is an adventurous expedition that requires endurance, stamina and resilience when the going gets tough. Whilst battling through arduous terrain in such a challenging and extreme environment, common issues include punctured tyres, holed engine sumps, damaged exhausts and endless vehicle recoveries from soft sand. But with all teams pulling together when needed, no one is left stranded.

Just some of the highlights that you can slip into conversation include…

  • Drive the original Dakar Rally route
  • Explore Gara Medouar, seen in 007’s Spectre
  • Climb the towering sand dunes of Erg Chebbi
  • Negotiate mountain passes of the High Atlas
  • Race across the vast dried bed of Lake Iriki
  • Wild camp under a star-lit Saharan sky
  • Make friends with Gibraltar’s rock apes!

The Support

Of course, with any vehicle costing from as little as £500, there are always going to be issues, so your team is backed up by a professional support crew in expedition equipped 4×4’s who are on hand to cover any eventualities - Leader, Guide, Medic & Mechanics.

Delivered by expedition specialists Max Adventure, we have been operating vehicles in extreme environments for over 25 years, in temperatures from -60C to +50C and 18,500 feet above sea level (and everyone has come back!).

We have worked alongside explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Hollywood actor Tom Hardy in places as far-flung as Siberia, the North Pole and Mt Everest.

The History

In 2014, three injured military veterans suffering from PTSD joined the Max Adventure team on a gruelling 12,000 mile overland expedition to far-eastern Siberia as a demonstration of how tough a new model Vauxhall vans was. This 60-day adventure through 20 countries was used as a European-wide TV advertising campaign for the company, whilst at the same time support the military charity Help for Heroes.

So profound was the improvement in the veterans’ mental health that the idea of taking injured military veterans on challenging vehicle adventures to aid their recovery from PTSD was conceived.

After 2 years of planning and raising the necessary sponsorship, Driven to Extremes was born in 2017. Under the strapline of ‘Feel Low…Drive High’ our first adventure took a team of veterans to the most extreme northerly point of the UK, a restricted private track to an old military radar site at the very top of the Shetland Isles.

The Duration

Starting and finishing in Portsmouth, UK, the total duration is 18 days. For teams joining us from continental Europe, the expedition starts in Gibraltar and finishes in Algeciras, southern Spain.
